Choosing an interior designer is choosing a partner for several months and a large part of your savings. Here is a simple method to choose well.
Step 1: Get clear on your needs
Before calling anyone, list what you want done: full home or a few rooms, new apartment or renovation, must-have features, Vastu requirements, move-in date and a comfortable budget range.
Step 2: Build a shortlist of three
Look at Google reviews, Instagram and websites, and ask friends who recently did their homes. Prefer designers who show real, finished projects in Vizag.
Step 3: Meet them and visit their studio
A studio visit tells you a lot: how organised they are, the quality of their samples and whether they listen.
Step 4: Compare drawings and BOQs, not just totals
Ask each designer for a layout and an itemised BOQ for the same brief. Compare materials, hardware brands, board grades and what is included. A lower total often means lower specifications.
Step 5: Check execution and timelines
Who executes the work? How is progress tracked? What happens if there is a delay? Design-build firms remove the gap between designer and contractor.
Red flags
- A single-line quote with no specifications
- Pressure to pay a large advance immediately
- No 3D or drawings before work starts
- Vague answers about materials and hardware
- No finished projects or reviews you can verify
