Renovating an older home can give you a modern space without moving, but surprises hide behind walls. This checklist helps you plan properly.
Before you design
- Get a structural check before moving or removing any walls
- Inspect for seepage, dampness and leaks
- Check the age and condition of electrical wiring
- Check plumbing lines and water pressure
- Confirm society or building rules if you live in an apartment
Plan the scope
- List rooms to renovate and must-haves for each
- Decide whether to renovate in phases or all at once
- Plan where you will live during the work
Fix the basics first
Waterproofing, rewiring and plumbing come before any finishes. New interiors on top of old problems won't last.
Then design
Re-plan the layout for light, flow and Vastu, then design the kitchen, bathrooms, storage, flooring, ceilings and lighting.
During the work
- Protect furniture and floors you are keeping
- Agree on working hours with neighbours
- Keep track of changes against the BOQ
At handover
- Test every light, switch, tap and drain
- Check all shutters, drawers and locks
- Collect warranties and manuals
