Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian system of design that relates spaces to directions and the natural elements. Many families in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana want their homes to follow it. In apartments you often can't change the structure, but a lot can still be done through layout and interiors.
Entrance
Keep the main entrance well lit, clutter-free and welcoming. A good shoe storage unit and a clean, bright foyer make a big difference.
Kitchen
Vastu traditionally prefers the cooking area in the south-east and the cook facing east. In modular kitchens, we plan the hob and sink placement to follow this as closely as the layout allows, keeping fire and water elements apart.
Pooja room or unit
The north-east is traditionally preferred for the pooja space. In apartments without a separate room, a well-designed pooja unit in the right zone of the living or dining area works beautifully.
Master bedroom
The south-west is traditionally preferred for the master bedroom, with the bed placed so you sleep with your head towards the south or east.
Living room
Keep heavy furniture towards the south and west walls where possible and keep the north and east lighter and more open.
Colours and light
Light, natural colours and plenty of daylight are recommended in most rooms, which also suit good modern design.
When the structure can't change
If the kitchen or bedrooms aren't in ideal directions, furniture placement, the orientation of key elements, colours and lighting can still bring a layout closer to Vastu.
