Lighting is the most underrated part of interior design. The same room can feel cold, cramped or luxurious depending on how it is lit.
Use three layers of light
- Ambient: general light for the whole room, often from the ceiling
- Task: focused light for cooking, reading or working
- Accent: light that highlights art, textures or features
Choose the right colour temperature
Warm white feels cosy in bedrooms and living rooms. Neutral or cool white works better for kitchens, bathrooms and work areas.
Plan the false ceiling with the lighting
A false ceiling hides wiring and allows cove lights, spotlights and profile lights. Keep designs proportionate to ceiling height; heavy designs can make rooms feel low.
Room-by-room ideas
- Living room: cove lighting plus a statement fixture
- Kitchen: bright ambient light and under-cabinet task lights
- Bedroom: warm, dimmable lights and bedside reading lamps
- Pooja room: soft, warm accent lighting
- Bathroom: good mirror lighting
Common mistakes
- Relying on one bright ceiling light
- Too few switches or no two-way switches
- Ignoring glare from spotlights
- Deciding lighting after the ceiling is built
