A bedroom should do one thing above all: help you rest. Modern bedroom design is about calm colours, soft light, uncluttered surfaces and a few beautiful details. Here are ten ideas we use often.
1. Make the headboard the hero
An upholstered, panelled or wooden headboard wall instantly makes a bedroom feel designed. Extending it into bedside panels with integrated lights looks especially luxurious.

2. Keep the palette soft
Muted tones like soft grey, sage, warm white, beige and dusty blue are restful. Save bold colour for small accents like cushions or a throw.
3. Use warm, dimmable lighting
Warm white light, a dimmer and reading lamps on each side let you wind down at night. Avoid harsh overhead lights as the only source.

4. Build in full-height wardrobes
Floor-to-ceiling wardrobes with handle-less or profile shutters look clean and give maximum storage. Mirror shutters can make the room feel bigger.
5. Choose a bed with storage
Hydraulic or drawer storage under the bed holds bedding and seasonal clothes, which is valuable in apartments.
6. Layer textures
Mix linen bedding, a soft rug, wooden side tables and textured curtains. Layered textures make a simple room feel rich.

7. Use sheer and blackout curtains together
Sheers let in soft daylight; blackout curtains behind them block early sun and streetlight for better sleep.
8. Add a reading or dressing corner
An accent chair by the window or a slim dressing unit turns a corner into a personal space.
9. Keep tech and clutter hidden
Plan charging points in bedside tables and concealed wiring for the TV, if you have one, so surfaces stay clear.
10. Follow Vastu for bed placement
The master bedroom is traditionally placed in the south-west, with the bed positioned so you sleep with your head towards the south or east. Avoid placing the bed directly under a beam.
