Interior design is the planning of indoor spaces so they work well, feel good and look beautiful. It covers how a room is laid out, how light enters and is added, how you store things, which materials are used and how all of it comes together into one consistent home.
Interior design vs interior decoration
Decoration is about the finishing layer: furniture, cushions, curtains, art and accessories. Interior design starts much earlier. It decides where walls, doors, lights, switches, plumbing points and storage go, and it plans the ceiling, flooring and joinery. A designer thinks about how you will live in the space; a decorator styles the space once it exists.
Both matter, but good design makes decoration easy. When the layout, lighting and storage are right, even simple furniture looks good.
What does an interior designer do?
- Understands your family, routines, taste and budget
- Plans the layout of each room, including Vastu where needed
- Designs lighting, false ceilings and electrical points
- Designs storage: wardrobes, kitchen, TV units, study and utility
- Selects materials, colours, finishes and hardware
- Produces drawings and 3D visuals so you can see the result in advance
- Supervises execution so the finished home matches the design
The main parts of a home interior
- Space planning: how furniture and movement fit in each room
- Lighting: natural light, ambient, task and accent lighting
- Storage and joinery: wardrobes, modular kitchen, cabinets
- Surfaces: flooring, wall finishes, ceilings and countertops
- Furniture and soft furnishings
- Colour and material palette that ties every room together
How we do interior design at Manzil Homes
We are a women-led design and construction studio based in Visakhapatnam. Our process has four stages:
- Discovery: we map your lifestyle, take Vastu inputs and agree on budget clarity.
- Concept and 3D: mood boards, materials and photo-realistic 3D renders of each room.
- Detailing: technical drawings for joinery, electrical and lighting so the site team builds exactly what was designed.
- Build and handover: site execution with quality checks, finishing and on-time handover with after-care.
Because we also handle construction, we can solve problems that pure decorators can't, such as moving plumbing points, fixing seepage or reinforcing a slab for a heavy feature.
